Sandcastle Contest
Every year, my small charming beach town hosts a sandcastle contest. This year was the 60th Anniversary. The contest was started in 1964 when a tsunami impacted tourism and no one wanted to visit. You can read more about the history here.
The sandcastle contest is always a special event for me. My Dad passed away in late May 2013 and I had just bought my beach cottage. That year, my sister came down for the event and we put together patio furniture, slept on cots and went to the sandcastle festival. I remember walking around in a bit of a daze, the way you do after someone you love dies.
The last two years I have been volunteering to judge the teen and junior categories.
There are all types of categories from the sand fleas (the youngest sandcastle builders) to the teen and junior categor to small and large group (These are often family and friend groups) to the more professional level of master categories. Here are some photos of the event.
